DIY Vaccination Information

We always prefer that a veterinary professional handles medical care. When that isn’t practical or affordable, over-the-counter vaccines can help protect community cats.

Important:We strongly recommend that veterinary professionals handle all medical care, including vaccinations. The information below is provided for caretakers for whom professional care isn’t always practical or financially possible.

Affordable over-the-counter kits

Did you know that your local Wilco or Tractor Supply most likely offers a DIY over-the-counter vaccination kit for your cat or kitten? These kits typically cost just $13–$17.

Wondering which kit to purchase? We highly recommend the “Focus Cat Vax 3 Plus FeLV”for just a couple of dollars more. Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) is a highly contagious virus easily transmitted between cats via saliva and nasal secretions — one hiss or spit could result in your outdoor cat contracting the virus.

Keeping records

Step-by-step written and video instructions for at-home vaccination are available from the manufacturer, along with a free “Do-It-Yourself Vaccination Card” to help you track your cat’s records.

You cannot administer the rabies vaccine yourself. Rabies must be given by a veterinary professional and, by law, is required for all cats and dogs in Washington State. It is a core, essential vaccine. We recommend booking an appointment with the VIP Petcare Mobile Vaccine Clinic.
