Outdoor Winter Shelters

Feral, community, and barn cats need protection from the cold. A simple, well-built shelter can be the difference between life and death in winter.

Remember: “Hay is for horses. Straw is for strays!” Straw repels moisture and insulates far better than hay or blankets, which trap dampness and freeze.

Styrofoam & plastic tub shelters

Jenny German of the Michigan Pet Alliance and Snip Nowdemonstrates how to build an outdoor winter shelter or dry feeding station using Styrofoam and plastic storage tubs — an affordable, insulated option you can assemble at home.

Heavy-duty cooler shelters

Mike Phillips of the NYC Feral Cat Initiative shows how to convert a heavy-duty cooler into a durable, insulated winter shelter for feral, community, and barn cats.

Shelter placement tips

  • Elevate shelters off the cold ground when possible.
  • Face the entrance away from prevailing wind, and keep the opening just large enough for a cat to enter.
  • Insulate with straw — never hay, blankets, or towels, which hold moisture and freeze.
  • Place shelters in quiet, sheltered areas away from foot traffic.

We provide free and low-cost shelters and winter shelters for colonies we assist. If you care for a colony and need help, let us know.
